The UK produces about 330 million tonnes of waste each year, a quarter of which is from homes and business. It is hugely important for the environment that we get our waste management under control, which is why the government is constantly looking new measures to help reduce waste. The biggest part of reducing the amount of waste that enters landfill sites is recycling. All councils in the UK have strict guidelines and targets on how much waste is recycled through their borough. Tough measures have been introduced such as charging people who fail to recycle their rubbish and, in parts of the country, weekly bin collections have been reduced to fortnightly.
UK households produced 30.5 million tonnes of waste in 2003/04, of which 17% was collected for recycling. In 10 years the amount of recycling has increased to 44.9% in 2014. We hope we can get this figure above 50% in the next few years, and here at James Waste Management, we are doing all we can to help.
